Houston Does Not Have Zoning Laws

Zoning laws attack property owners by prohibiting them from using their land or even building on it.  They create an all-powertful government (what used to be called a “dictatorship” before the modern era) because private citizens must beg for permission and government can say “yes”, it can say “no”, and it can say “bribe me.”

Houston does not have this obscene regime.  As Coyote points out, this may be the cause of their surprising resilience to the boom and bust of real estate that has occurred in every other major city in the US.

I think Houston’s free market deserves a lot more attention that it gets!
